Over the years, the internet and social media have allowed craftspeople and home-project enthusiasts to share their work, and often people provide tutorials on how they accomplished these projects. This has created an online trend of taking home projects, and doing it yourself (also known as DIYing it). DIY trends have covered many topics, from refurbishing antique furniture, to adding walls to your house, and even installing floors. Installing floors can vary in difficulty, and not all floor installations are created equal. In today’s blog post, we will talk about the easiest floors for DIY projects, for those DIY enthusiasts.

At Northern Colorado Carpets, we love all of the below options for DIY enthusiasts. All of the examples listed in today’s post are a type of flooring called “floating floors,” – which means they use an installation method that doesn’t require them to be nailed or glued down. Floating floors are great because they can often be installed on top of an existing floor, should you decide that you’re not ready to tear out any previous flooring. Without further ado, these are the easiest floors to DIY:

The Easiest Floor to DIY: Vinyl & Luxury Vinyl Flooring

One really neat thing about luxury vinyl is that it comes in options for planks and tiles, which gives customers a huge variety of looks to work with! It also is one of the easiest flooring types to maintain, which makes it a great option for anyone who is a fan of DIY- home projects.

So what does a Luxury Vinyl Tile DIY project look like?

Well, there are two major options for this. Vinyl planks are often designed to click together on the floor with interlocking grooves. There are many names for this installation style of flooring, but it is often called click-together flooring. Because the planks simply click together, there are no boding agents, glues, or nails involved. This makes it one of the easiest floors to DIY.

Alternatively, luxury vinyl tiles are often self-adhesive. Just like any sticker, you would peel on the back, and then simply stick it!

For either of these options, we strongly recommend thoroughly cleaning the area that you’re installing the flooring on to ensure best results.

Another one of the Easiest Floors to DIY: Laminate Flooring

Just like luxury vinyl planks, laminate also often comes in click-together planks, making it one of the easiest floors to DIY. Of course, there are also options to glue or nail laminate planks, but this is a less popular installation method for obvious reasons.

We strongly recommend that you let your laminate planks rest in the room that they will be installed in for at least 48 hours. This allows the planks to acclimate to the temperature and humidity of the room prior to the installation process. We are also happy to offer padded barriers that go beneath the laminate tiles – these are great for minimizing noise while walking on the planks, and great for protecting your floors from moisture.

The Last of the Easiest Floors to DIY: Carpet Tiles

Traditionally, carpet is sold in a huge roll that is designed to sit on top of an underneath padding. Both the carpet roll, and the underneath padding would then be nailed to the base floor. It is recommended that traditional carpet installation be left to the professionals – carpet tiles, however, are an entirely different story.

Carpet tiles are often sold in 12inX12in squares, and usually come in the option of stick-and-peel tiles, similar to luxury vinyl tiles. If you select a carpet tile that does not come in a stick-and-peel option, you will likely need double sided carpet tape to make the tiles adhere to the base flooring.

One really neat thing about carpet tiles is that if one tile gets damaged or stained, you can replace it without having to uproot your whole flooring! Carpet tiles are also great because they come in a large variety of colors and patterns, and if you’re the creative type, you might use the tiles to make your own patterns on the floor!

At Northern Colorado Carpets, we love all of these options for DIY enthusiasts. Floating floors are a great way to change the look of your home without tearing out previous flooring, and are easy to install.

Of course, if you decide that you’re not ready to DIY it, or you want a type of flooring that isn’t DIY friendly, Northern Colorado Carpets can help you out! We offer installation on all floorings that we sell, and we would be happy to help your transform your home. Give us a call today.
