Tile is a great option for flooring, especially in areas that might be exposed to moisture, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and basements! Tile comes in a large variety of looks, materials, and patterns, such as ceramic, porcelain, glass, marble, and even stone. Tile varies great in cost, which means that in many cases, it can be quite the investment for your home, which makes it perfectly reasonable that one might want to go the extra mile to protect it. You may ask yourself, “How can I protect my tile floors?” The answer is simple to say, but harder to do: tile floor refinishing!

Tile floor refinishing is the process of applying a new coating over the top of existing tiles. The refinishing coat is typically made of a hard acrylic.

Why Should I invest in Tile Floor Refinishing?

As previously mentioned, tile floor refinishing can protect your tiles from damage, but there are actually a few different reasons to refinish tile flooring.

1. Tile floor refinishing can repair damage!

Albeit, minor damage, such as cracks or chips. The refinishing fills in the missing pieces, and evens out the level of the flooring.

2. Giving your floors a new look

Tile is one of those types of flooring that can come in many different looks, and over the years, the tile floor trends change. In the 1950s, checkered tile patterns were incredibly popular, but nowadays, not so much. Tile floor refinishing allows you to change to look of your floor without going through all the mess of replacing the tiles themselves.

In addition, tile floor refinishing can hide stained grouts, and float them!

3. Easier Cleaning

While tiles themselves can be easy to clean with a vacuum, a broom, or a mop, the grout in between the tiles can be a bit of a pain. The grout often sits slightly lower than the remaining area of the tile, and the grout is generally a very porous material, which makes it very easy for dirt to get stuck in it. Tile floor refinishing covers this area, in addition to the tiles themselves.

Tile Floor Refinishing Process

Tile floor refinishing involves a very important set of pre-work, and that is making sure that your tile floor is clean. First, you will need to either vacuum or sweep the area to remove it of large debris, such as hair and dust. Next, it is good to mop the floor, even if the refinishing product of your choice includes a cleaner. Then, we recommend letting the floor dry entirely before proceeding with the application of the refinishing products.

Generally, the higher quality refinishing products will include a two-step process. The first step will be the application of a specific cleaner that is included in the package. These specialty cleaners can help remove anything that the sweeping and mopping didn’t, such as body oils or detergents.

The next part of the process will be applying the included bonding agent to the grout of the tile. This smooths over the grout and makes it level with the tie.

Then, finally, you can apply the acrylic coating and sealant.

Tile floor refinishing is not the ideal option for every home, and refinishing shouldn’t be used on every type of tile – for example, many stone tiles are brittle and can break. It also cannot be undone once it is done, so one should be fairly confident that this is the right choice for them.
